‘Walk in wisdom….redeeming the time’ (Colossians 4:5)
How will you spend your next twenty-four hours? Many of the hours will be taken up with necessary work and family responsibilities, and about a third of it with rest and sleep. But what about the available time we have options for? How well do we take control of the ‘leisure’ hours so that each day counts? Could it be that television, internet surfing, trivial tasks, the wrong people, or other meaningless distractions consume the hours? Leadership experts say that focusing on the top 20 per cent of our priorities brings an 80 per cent return on our effort. So when we get up each morning, we have an opportunity to resolve to fill the hours according to God’s will, and give our energies to the things that will help us to fulfil it. The reality is, there will always be things competing for our attention. Advertisers want us to spend time – and money – on their products or to pursue ‘must have’ experiences. Even our own desires can be so diverse and our focus so scattered that we are not sure what should have our attention first. That’s why we need to focus like a laser on our God-given purpose. Whatever we concentrate on, we will give strength and energy to. Our priorities determine how we spend our time, and setting them prayerfully and maintaining them carefully is an essential discipline. We can’t, perhaps, do everything we want to do, but we can do everything God wants us to do. There is a choice! Godly fulfilment and success comes from doing the right things first, letting the rest go, and then finding the joy of what pursuing His will leads us to.
