‘How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.‘ (Psalm 139: 17 – 18)
How much does God think about you? The Psalmist proposes that God’s thoughts toward us are more in number than the grains of sand. He is attempting to help us grasp God’s immense regard and love for each of us individually. Elsewhere in scripture we learn that God has numbered every hair on our head, knows every move we make, the thoughts we think, and the choices we make.
And so, He is able to plan the details of our lives for our good, to reveal Himself to us. Do we consider the thoughts He has toward us precious? We must first realise that He always has our eternal good in mind, not just our temporary happiness. Once we grasp that, things begin to fit together.
We will never understand it all in this life, but we can trust that He will lovingly bringing us down the road that is best for us. Our part in this? It is to submit to His guiding hand of love.
